OpenRouter — language model API

Use OpenRouter in Deskgram 2: API key, model selection, response checks and the difference between model access and MCP.

OpenRouter — language model API
AI and MCPModel API

OpenRouter provides one API for language models from different suppliers. Deskgram 2 has a built-in OpenRouter provider and a dedicated API key setting for AI modules that offer this provider.

Connect OpenRouter

  1. Obtain an API key from your OpenRouter account.
  2. Save it in the OpenRouter field in Deskgram's API settings.
  3. Open the intended AI module and choose OpenRouter.
  4. Select a model available to your account. Refresh the model list after saving the key if needed.
  5. Use the available AI test to send a short request before running the main task.

OpenRouter usage is billed separately from Deskgram. Check the balance and the selected model's terms. Free models can have quotas and availability restrictions.

Choose a model

Test examples in the same language and length as the replies, comments or conversations you intend to generate. AI parameters depend on the module and model; settings from one model may not work with another.

If a model rejects a parameter or returns no text, start with a short request and basic settings, then add requirements one at a time. Take the exact model identifier from the OpenRouter catalog. Similar names do not imply equal pricing, context or features.

API address

OpenRouter's base URL is https://openrouter.ai/api/v1, with Bearer authorization. Deskgram's built-in provider already sets the address, so normally you only need the key and model.

You do not need a second custom provider to duplicate the built-in one. For a custom configuration, check whether the field expects a base URL or a complete endpoint: repeating /chat/completions produces an invalid request.

Model access is separate from MCP

The model API generates text. An agent's MCP connection to Deskgram needs its own server address, token and permissions. OpenCode can use a chosen model provider and call Deskgram tools over MCP, but a key saved in Deskgram is not transferred to it.

Errors and data

For authorization errors, check that the key is an OpenRouter key, not an MCP token. For balance or quota errors, review the account and key limits. Refresh the catalog if a model is unavailable. For unexpected output, simplify the language, length and format instructions. Response time also depends on the external provider and model.

Requests go to an external service. Before using real conversations, check which data the module includes and the selected model's data processing terms.
